Introduction to Fiction

12:30p-1:20p D (25) 3 cr.

COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION.

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of reading fiction by concentrating on the fundamental issues of character, scene, setting, dialogue, plot and, most importantly, point of view. We will be reading from a range of modern and contemporary short stories and one or two novels. Since this is a writing intensive course, work will include a series of two-page critical responses to stories and books; two longer (5-6 page) analytic essays; some creative explorations of the problems of writing fiction.

Books: The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction and a novel to be chosen later. Please contact Matthew Cariello in May for a complete reading list: mcariell@indiana.edu
