COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION.
This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of reading
fiction by
concentrating on the fundamental issues of character, scene, setting,
dialogue, plot and,
most importantly, point of view. We will be reading from a range of
modern and contemporary
short stories and one or two novels. Since this is a writing intensive
course, work will
include a series of two-page critical responses to stories and books;
two longer (5-6 page)
analytic essays; some creative explorations of the problems of writing
fiction.
Books: The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction and a novel to be
