This course will touch on many areas: the antecedents of the modern
Democratic party, the Jacksonian formation, the party's divisions on
major ante bellum issues (slavery, tariffs, internal improvements,
public lands, and the national bank), the era of Civil War and postwar
reconstruction, Democratic resurgence under Grover Cleveland and
Woodrow Wilson, the FDR and Truman eras, and the Kennedy-Johnson
years. In addition, there will be discussion of party organizations
on national, state, and local levels, and of the major Democratic
leaders in the Congress, in governorships, and in municipal politics.
There will be two book reviews and a final exam.
