Above section carries culture studies credit
Above section open to undergraduates only
This course will begin with the European old regime and proceed to the
origins of the industrial revolution and its consequences. With
economic changes came the rise of revolutions and wars, as well as new
ideologies, including liberalism, nationalism and socialism, which
will dominate our study of the 19th century. We will closely study
the transformations caused by World War I, and its role in unleashing
this century's major challenges to liberal democracy: fascism and
communism. In addition, we will look at the rise of the Soviet Union,
the Great Depression, the origins and consequences of World War II and
the Cold War. One of the central topics of the semester will be the
Holocaust, which we will study with a monograph on the social and
psychological experience of Western Civilization's darkest moment.
Grading
Students will be evaluated on the basis of short take-home essays (3-4
pages, typed, double-spaced), a final in-class exam, and a series
brief (approx. 1 page) responses to questions posed by the simulation.
The value of each assignment breaks down as follows:
Class participation 10% of grade
Simulation response papers 10% of grade
Two take home essays 20% (each) of grade
Final in-class exam 40% of grade
In addition, students will be expected to participate in class - this
is essential to doing well on the simulation, take-home essays and the
final exam. Excellent participation includes contributing to in-class
discussions with questions and comments generated from readings and
lecture.
IMPORTANT: Late papers will not be accepted without prior
arrangements with the instructor.
