Lectures are geared to the political, constitutional, and economic
basis of American history from the colonial period to the Civil War,
stressing such events and movements as the Revolution, the
Constitution, growth of political parties, wars (1812, Mexican, and
Civil), economic controversies, and slavery.  There will be midterm
and final examinations.  Required text is Unger, These United States,
Vol. 1.
