"All I care about is getting____(fill in with choice
desire." "What's the world, if you lose your soul?" "You've got to
look out for 'Number One'." "How can you just stand around and watch
people get hurt?" "Nice guys finish last." "As long as I know I did
the right thing, that's all that counts." "People must be basically
good because children are innocent." "It's never okay to
cheat." "What's right to you may not be what's right to me."

Ordinary life is infused with such moral language and claims - so
much so that sometimes we accept such claims without really examining
what they mean or even noticing that they often conflict with each
other. It this course we will take a closer look at key moral
positions and the presuppositions underlying them. We will read and
discuss what philosophers have to say on the subject of what morality
is and why we should care about it, as well as how it relates to
issues like vegetarianism and animal rights, human cloning, corporate
commercialism, and war.
