In this class we will be looking at the way some noted, and not so
noted,
critics have written about film and TV, and doing quite a bit of
writing
about film and TV ourselves. Readings will include Camille Paglia on
THE
BIRDS, Henry Jenkins on STAR TREK, and a number of essays on film
noir,
kid vid, and British working class film. Screenings will include:
Alfred Hitchcocks THE BIRDS, Kathryn Bigelows BLUE STEEL, Carl
Franklins
DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS, David Lynchs LOST HIGHWAY, and ToddHaynes
VELEVET
GOLDMINE, as well as episodes from TWIN PEAKS, ROSEANNE, SESAME
STREET,
and the X-FILES.
This class meets the Intensive Writing Requirement, so students will
be
asked to write one 5 page paper and one 10-12 page paper which will be
revised. There will also be a take-home final exam. For more
