This course surveys painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europe and
America from the late 14th century to the present. Emphasis in this
course will be placed on recognizing the visual characteristics of period
styles through a study of individual works by major artists and
architects, and utilizing works of art to better understand the social,
cultural and economic realities of various historical eras.
Discussion will emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and there will be
museum visits as appropriate. Among topics to be discussed are: art
conservation, the museum's responsibilities to visitors and works of
art, forgeries, art dealers and the art market.
Grades are based on performance and improvement on exams and papers,
discussions, and attendance.
