History | American History II
H106 | 4473 | Freeman

This course will focus on major themes in American history from 1865
to the present. Unlike many high school classes, which encourage rote
memorization of facts, we will try to think about history in more
sophisticated ways. We will do this using assigned readings, class
discussions, photographs, posters, films, and other projects. This
course will hopefully encourage you to consider different and
contradictory perspectives on the past and present, and to
acknowledge the ambiguous nature of American history and society.
Readings will include Alan Brinkley’s The Unfinished Nation and
primary sources from T.H. Breen’s The Power of Words. Course
requirements include six two-page response papers and a final
examination.
