Religious Studies | American Evangelicalism
R202 | 4641 | Pizzi, R.

What’s the difference between a Baptist and a Methodist? What are
Pentecostals doing when they “speak in tongues”? Do Jerry Falwell
and Jesse Jackson really worship the same God? These are just a few
of the questions students will address in this introductory course on
the history and culture of American evangelicalism. While we will
examine the historical development of evangelical Christianity in the
United States, many of the readings, lectures and discussions will
focus on the more contentious cultural issues that divide
contemporary evangelicals. In addition to historical essays,
students will read novels and view films by and about evangelicals.
