This course will provide a systematic analysis and overview of the
correctional component of the American criminal justice system.
The content of the course will include an examination of sentencing,
criminal sanctions, the history of corrections, punishment
philosophies, probation, intermediate sanctions, community-based
corrections, and institutional corrections.  The content of the
course will be examined in the context of the legal, political,
cultural, and economic forces that influence and shape the
correctional process.   Throughout the course, critical examination
of relevant and emergent issues will supplement practical and
theoretical foundations to provide a more comprehensive
understanding of American corrections.
