The International Causes and Consequences of the Sept. 11 Attacks
This course will focus on the international causes and consequences
of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The events preceding and
surrounding September 11 will serve as a type of case study for
students to analyze different perspectives of international politics.
This course will examine U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East from
the Cold War to the present and Islamic Fundamentalism as precursors
to the attacks. In addition, we will discuss the international
consequences of such attacks and the U.S. response. We will further
examine the role of international alliances, organizations, and
institutions in formulating reactionary policies to these events and
in dealing with the aftermath of war as well the effect of these
events on future international order. Thus, the first objective of
the course is to introduce students to international issues such as
globalization, ethnic conflict, terrorism, international alliances
and organizations by focusing specifically on how these issues relate
to September 11. The second objective is to help students understand
how such an event could occur and what the future consequences of
such an event might be in the international context.
