This course surveys painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europe
and America from the lat 14th century to the present.  The emphasis
is two-fold: 1) recognizing the visual characteristics of period
styles through a study of individual works by major artists and
architects, and  2) utilizing works of  art to better understand the
social, cultural, and economic realities of various historical
eras.  Among the monuments we will study are, Michelangelo’s David,
the palace at Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, Monet’s Rouen Cathedral,
Picasso’s Guernica, and I.M. Pei’s IU Art Museum.  Discussions will
emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and there will be museum
visits and campus walks as appropriate.  Among the topics to be
discussed are: art conservation, the museum’s responsibilities to
visitors and work of art, forgeries, public sculpture/public
morality, art dealers and the art market.

Grades are based on performance/improvement on exams and
participation in discussions, attitude, and attendance.
