In this course we will examine the history of the republics of Latin
America since the bitter independence struggles of the early 19th
Century. This will include the struggle for economic “development”
(including competing visions of what that development would be and
how to achieve it), the difficulties many Latin American republics
have had at achieving political democracy, the struggles of the
rural and urban poor, the often difficult condition of women within
Latin American societies, and the continuing struggles of oppressed
racial groups to achieve equality.
No prior knowledge of the subject is required for the course. I ask
only that you bring an active mind and a willingness to learn.
