Sociologists, like researchers in other disciplines, rely on data
collection and analysis in order to understand the social world.
S370: Research Methods in Sociology provides a broad introduction to
the process of designing, conducting, and evaluating how sociologists
do research. Through readings, discussions, and assignments, you will
become familiar with the wide range of methods used by sociological
researchers. This range includes both quantitative and qualitative
approaches, and you will learn the advantages and disadvantages of
each, as well as how sociologists choose the most appropriate method
for their own research. By the end of the semester you will become a
sociologist in practice, with an understanding of how research is
actually conducted, the ability to critique research based on its
methods, and basic skills in research design and completion.
