Telecommunications | Intro to Telecommunications Industry & Management

This class introduces students to the major telecommunications
industries operating in the United States and the management
practices common to those industries.  We will study broadcasting,
cable television, telephony, computer networks, and a variety of
other “players” in the telecommunications arena.  We will also look
at the various customers of telecommunications: the audience in the
case of mass media, clients or users in telephony and many of the
newer applications of technology, and the advertiser in the
commercial sector of the media and a variety of funding sources in
the public/non-commercial sector.

Major segments of the electronic communications industries include
programming, distribution, and sales (or funding in the case of non-
commercial media).  These segments of the industries can be affected
by technological developments, regulation and public policy, and how
they are managed.  All of these considerations will be covered in
the course of this class.

This course counts toward Social and Historical Studies distribution
requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences. It may, or may
