L374 12157 ETHNIC AMERICAN LITERATURE
Samrat Upadhyay

11:30a-12:20p D (30 students) 3 cr., A&H.

In this course we will feast ourselves upon a selection of wonderful
novels and short stories by American writers who write from a
distinctly ethnic perspective, including works by Asian Americans,
Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans. We will
use the texts to chart some of the main concerns of ethnic America,
discuss how they might be different or similar from mainstream
America. Students will write response papers, give one presentation,
and write one or two essays. The class will be discussion-based, and
will be an insightful and pleasurable way to spend our summer.

We will read books by Jhumpa Lahiri, Sherman Alexie, Toni Morrison,
Edward P. Jones, Ha Jin, Alice McDermott, and others.
