Fine Arts | Renaissance through Modern Art
A102 | 2110 | Hurd, Jessica

How are attitudes towards heroism, war, and gender communicated
through visual art and architecture? How might art be used to
illustrate religious texts, resist oppressive powers, or flaunt a
patron's social status? These are a few of the questions we will be
considering in our survey of major paintings, sculptures, and
architecture in Europe and America from the fourteenth century until
the present day. Students will employ formal visual analysis and
selected art historical terms in group exercises, museum projects, and
assignments. This will assist them in linking individual works to
particular artists and style periods. Equal emphasis will be placed on
the historical, social, and economical context of individual works.
