This course will introduce the students to the politics of various
South American and Central American countries. The main themes will be
institutions and ideologies. The course will aim to explain how state
institutions interact with the ideological divisions in these
countries to decide their political trajectories; specifically, their
move toward or away from democratization. To do so, I will overview
the type of institutions these countries have had: presidentialism,
semi-presidentialism, centralized bureaucracies, and strong armed
forces. I will also overview the main ideological cleavages in these
countries: the role of the church in society; workers/peasants rights
versus capitalism; the exchange between ecology and development.
