Classroom instruction in Hungarian will be offered three hours a day, five days a week, for eight
weeks. An additional five hours per week of supervised language practice, consisting of
supervised time in the language and computer laboratories, conversation hours, and Hungarian
films on video will be provided.
The course content will emphasize proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing on the
one hand, and essential details of social interaction and daily life on the other. We will give
special attention to linguistic formulae associated with interpersonal and institutional interactions,
such as requests for assistance and information at education, official, and research institutions.
Course Objectives:
1. Improve command of Hungarian in all four basic skills: listening comprehension, speaking,
reading, and writing.
2. Cover intermediate/upper intermediate areas of grammar.
3. Build and consolidate vocabulary through reading a variety of authentic materials,
including poems, short stories, and newspaper articles.
4. Give insight into Hungarian culture and politics through reading/viewing and discussion of
current newspaper articles, SCOLA news broadcasts, and e-mail news.
