As the sequel to L300, this course will complete the final chapters of
Wheelock's Latin Grammar then move on to an exploration of select Late
and Medieval Latin texts. Since so much of this literature is grounded
in a through knowledge of the Christian Bible, students will be assigned
selections of the Vulgate which will correspond to daily readings. This
course aims to introduce students to a wide variety of medieval genres:
travel literature, history, hagiography, drama, hymns and Biblical
exegesis. The following is a tentative list of authors to be explored:
Augustine, Egeria, Sulpicius Severus, Prudentius, Gregory of Tours, Bede,
Paul the Deacon, Einhard, Duoda, Hrotsvita of Gandersheim, Bernard of
Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen and Bonaventure.
