the 1890s and has appeared in many forms, supported by a wide variety of
groups for an equally wide variety of reasons. This course will look at the
debates; at the intellectual, psychological, and social arguments used to
support interdisciplinary curriculum of various kinds; and at some of the
collaborative interdisciplinary curriculum developments undertaken in
schools earlier in the twentieth century. Building on this foundation, the
course will culminate with relating those insights from earlier work to
contemporary interdisciplinary curriculum approaches, thus drawing together
