French And Italian | Lectures et analyses litteraires
F300 | 4412 | Knox-Juel and Johnston

This course is an introduction to the four major genres of French literature:
the poem, short story, play, and novel. We will read a sampling of texts
which reveal something about the image of women and their role in society
from the Middle Ages all the way through to the 20th century. Through a
close examination of these texts, the class will try to answer some of the
following questions: How are women viewed by male and female authors? How
do these perceptions differ from one another? How are they similar? What
types of images, language, and other techniques do these authors use to
portray women in this way? We will read works by both male and female
authors such as Pierre de Ronsard, Voltaire, Guy de Maupassant and Simone de
Beauvoir. While student participation in discussion of such questions is a
major component of the course, students will also learn how to write a
detailed analysis of a text (explication de texte), give a short oral
presentation in class, and complete four short written homework
assignments. There will be both a mid-term and a final exam.
