A366 | 4471 | Katz

This course will touch on many areas: the antecedents of the modern
Democratic party, the Jacksonian formation, the party's divisions on major
antebellum issues (slavery, tariffs, internal improvements, public lands,
and the national bank), the era of Civil War and postwar reconstruction,
Democratic resurgence under Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson, the FDR
and Truman eras, the Kennedy-Johnson years, and more recent party
developments. In addition, there will be a discussion of party
organizations on the national, state and local levels, and of major
Democratic leaders in the Congress, in the governorships, and in municipal
politics. There will be two book reviews and a final exam.
