Topic: Viennese Culture and Society before World War I

This course is an introduction to the culture and society of the city that
shaped Hitler's world view. Through lectures and discussion we will
examine some of the cultural battles that played out in Vienna and how
these had an influence on Hitler's life and thought. Topics covered will
include Austrian politics and society; Viennese musical, architectural and
artistic innovation; and political antisemitism. The course will conclude
by examining Hitler's Mein Kampf to see how he describes his years as an
art student in Vienna.
Readings will include Carl Schorske, Fin-de-siecle Vienna: Politcis and
Culture; Stefan Zaeig, The World of Yesterday; and Adolf Hitler, Mein
Kampf. Grades in the course will be based on a geography quiz and three
4-6 page papers.
