Executive Summary

Indiana University East and the Twenty-First Century Scholars program in the East Central District of Indiana have enjoyed a long mutually beneficial relationship. The program is housed at Indiana University East and the Office of Student Success, Academic Advising Center , Admissions and Records and Financial Aid work closely with program staff and students prior to their enrollment at the university. Once matriculated at IUE, program participants have not until the submission of this grant application, been provided the opportunity to participate in a college-level class/seminar designed specifically to fit their academic and personal needs. The students from the program are typically in the 55-65 percentiles in high school class rank and, if taken, their SAT scores are in the 800-900 range. These students are not strong academically and perhaps more importantly are first-generation college students with no framework with which to adjust to university academic work.

The Twenty-First Century Scholars Program Freshman Seminar will provide this student population with the tools necessary for successful college-level achievement. The Seminar will be offered fall and spring semesters and will not only focus on academic skills such as critical thinking, understanding text books, test taking skills, and note taking skills but also incorporate knowledge of university resources, computing services, library skills, time management, activities to build confidence and most importantly building connections with their fellow students and their campus.

A cohort group of 20 Scholars will be enrolled in the Seminar per semester. The cohort will be tracked by the Student Success Office semester to semester and year to year of enrollment using systems that will be developed.
