SACNAS founding member to present research and discuss science careers Sep. 7 The graduate students in the IU chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) have invited Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff, a SACNAS founding member and accomplished scientist, to visit the IU Bloomington campus on Friday, September 7, 2012. Dr. Villa-Komaroff completed her PhD thesis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on "Translation of Poliovirus RNA in Eukaryotic Cell-Free Systems" under Drs. David Baltimore and Harvey Lodish. Some of her postdoctoral work included cloning and expressing the human insulin gene into bacteria with Dr. Walter Gilbert at Harvard University. Dr. Villa-Komaroff has held positions at MIT, Harvard University, University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Harvard Medical School where some of her research encompassed growth factors and brain development. She then became a science administrator, VP for Research at Northwestern University in Illinois, and the Vice President for Research and Chief Operating Officer of Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Villa-Komaroff is currently the Chief Scientific Officer at CytonomeST, a company developing optical cell detection and purification systems. As a SACNAS founding member, Dr. Villa-Komaroff has dedicated considerable time and effort to recruiting and retaining diverse student populations in science. Her visit will include a seminar entitled "The Development of a System to Enable Cell Therapies with Adult Stem Cells" taking place during the biochemistry seminar series in CH033 at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 7, and a Q&A session for students and postdocs titled "Academia and Industry Careers in Science," in addition to regular appointments. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or graduate students interested in meeting with Dr. Villa-Komaroff during her visit may contact Jolene at jolramse@indiana.edu by August 24 to request an appointment.
