Groups Program seeks new director
Janice Wiggins recently retired as director of the Groups Program. DEMA will be launching a search and screen process for the next director with a target date of completion of July 1. Until then, Vice President Marshall has asked Roger Gildersleeve, and he has agreed, to serve as the interim director of the Groups Program, effective February 1, 2013. Gildersleeve was most recently associate director for Student Support in the Groups program.

DEMA FASE Mentors "Cover Bloomington" as part of A Day On, Not a Day Off: Working with FASE director Patrick Smith, Americorps volunteer Melissa Wurster, and Linda Hunt of the First United Church, site of the Interfaith Winter Shelter, 78 volunteers compiled community care kits for the homeless, prepared bedding, assisted with meal preparation, and collected cans for donation to the Community Kitchen.

DEMA welcomes Kelly School of Business professor Martin McCrory as associate vice president in DEMA and vice provost for educational inclusion and diversity at IU Bloomington.
"Professor McCrory's appointment reflects the high priority that Indiana University places on meeting the needs of underrepresented students," Vice President Marshall said. "His experience as chair of the Kelley School of Business undergraduate honors program will be particularly constructive to advancing initiatives in support of Hudson and Holland, Groups, and 21st Century Scholars."

This documentary presents a vivid picture of the first Chinese American movie star (1905-1961)–both an architect and a victim of her times. The filmmaker, Yunah Hong, will introduce the film be available for a Q&A session after the showing.
Holi Festival

Holi, one of the most festive holidays in India, is commonly known as a festival of colors. It is a day to dance, eat delicious food, and throw colored powder to symbolize the coming of spring and the bringing of good harvests. Holi typically falls on the day after the first full moon in the month of March and is an occasion for celebration and fun! This free event will feature ethnic cuisines, live performances, henna, and a color fight! Be sure to wear something you don't mind getting color on. Screening of "Danny in North Korea"

In 2007, with the help of LiNK, Danny arrived in the United States and began his new life. This is a documentary about Danny's story–from his challenging life in North Korea, his brave escape to China, and his resettlement journey in the US. An informal discussion will follow the screening.

This past election produced a couple of firsts: Tulsi Gabbard was the first Hindu-American female congresswoman to be sworn in the U.S. Congress, and Mazie Hirono was the first Asian American female senator. At this informal roundtable lunch discussion, the challenges that Asian American women have experienced and/or continue to experience as they take on roles perceived as "non-traditional" will be discussed.

IU to host summer science camp for middle school students

The IU Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs invites students currently in grades 5, 6, and 7 to apply for the "Adventures in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)" Camp to be held from June 16-28, 2013. The camp promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, and historically supports underserved and underrepresented students. Students selected for the program will engage in highly structured STEM-focused precollegiate curriculum. The Adventures in STEM Camp includes experiments and field experiences which encourage the development of each student's academic and communication skills. Classes are taught by IU faculty and affiliates. Students attend the camp free of charge.
At the time of application, students must be current 5th, 6th, or 7th graders who are Indiana residents attending school in the state of Indiana and must be recommended by their science and math teacher(s). It is extremely important to the students' success that they be mature, self-reliant, and able to work effectively in teams. Students should have a sincere interest in science and mathematics and at least a B average in science and a B average in math to be eligible.
