La Casa Director Lillian Casillas-Origel featured in Inside IU Bloomington

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Lillian Casillas-Origel was presented with the IU Latino Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award during La Casa's 40th Anniversary Weekend, Oct. 11-13, 2013. As director of La Casa Latino Cultural Center, Casillas-Origel serves many more students than the 1500 Latinos on campus; many non-Latino students participate in La Casa's programs.

"It's more than just teaching about Latino-ness and creating support systems, but where you really become a part of people's lives," she said.

Casillas-Origel immigrated to the United States from Mexico with her family when she was 10 years old. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from IU in 1989 and a Master of Science degree in education in 1998. She became director of La Casa in 1994. In 2011 Casillas-Origel became a US citizen.
