Information for Prospective Students

Welcome! This section includes information regarding application procedures and requirements for those interested in the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. For additional inquiries please contact the dgsarth @ (Director of Graduate Studies).

Application Procedure:

Applications to the M.A. and Ph.D. programs are made via the Indiana University Application system.
The following materials are required of each applicant:

  • Online Application form
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Transcripts (two copies, sent electronically from originating university)
  • GRE scores
  • TOEFL scores for applicants using English as a second language
  • Writing sample
  • Three letters of recommendation

Application materials are to be submitted electronically by uploading them to the Online application form. Please note that Online recommendation requests are sent to recommenders after submission of the application. 

Deadline: January 15 for Fall semester admission

GRE scores: The Department recommends a minimum verbal score of 160; however, scores are evaluated in the context of the complete application package.

International Student Information: Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or who have had their previous schooling outside of the United States must follow special application procedures. For information see the Office of International Services or contact:

TOEFL and IELTS exams: Indiana University requires that non-native speakers of English take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate proficiency in English. The requirement is waived for applicants who have earned a degree in the United States. A student who has earned a degree outside of the United States is required to submit valid TOEFL or IELTS scores, even if English was the language of instruction at his or her college or university. A minimum overall TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet-based exam or 600 on the paper-based exam is required.  For the IELTS exam a minimum score of 7.0 is required.
