The following text first appeared in the last issue of the association Newsletter. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As many of you know, the Presidency and other executive positions in CANQUA have been held, in the past, by archaeologists, botanists, entomologists, geologists, geographers, palynologists and zoologists. In short, almost all disciplines which come to mind when one thinks of general Quaternary research. This diverse executive reflects the wide nature of the membership and, hopefully, adequately represents the interests of the members at large. The Canadian Quaternary Association is recognized as the national body in Canada which is entrusted to represent the interests of all Quaternarists in the country. CANQUA provides Canadian Quaternarists with a nonpartisan, but official voice in local, national and international scientific affairs. Our ties with organizations such as the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA), to name two, are well established. Todays educational, political and economic climate requires a strong and relevant presence to survive reduced funding, institutional down-sizing and public skepticism of most sciences. Small and special interest groups are less likely to be heard or respected in the long-run. CANQUA provides all of us a single umbrella organization to ensure preservation of a diverse collection of Quaternary based disciplines. During the tenure of this new executive, the objective of council will be to adequately represent the best interests of our members. This new council is best viewed as facilitators; by accepting their new position each councilor has, in effect, agreed to promote and further the importance of Quaternary studies in Canada. A two year term does not allow us to both implement and evaluate success of any new projects, programs or initiatives. Nonetheless, we intend to implement as many positive initiatives as possible. Basic activities are simple, since we call upon the existing membership to actively canvas colleagues and students to become members of CANQUA. The most influential Quaternarists in our community, university faculty, should encourage their students to become active early-on in their careers in such organizations as CANQUA. Similarly, we should all strive to improve interactions with related organizations representing zoologists, permafrost specialists, etc. Our last biennial meeting in Newfoundland, co-sponsored with the CGRG (Canadian Geomorphological Research Group), is a good example of such a positive move. The changes in your association during the last several years have been very effective. The success of the Quaternary listserve is one excellent example. In the past, interest to host our Biennial Meeting has been dismal, quite often requiring arm-twisting. I am pleased to announce that our next meeting in 1997 in Quebec has been in the planning stage since last year and that the 1999 venue has already been established and is also being planned. The executive has also received an offer to host the 2001 meeting!! Clearly, the above items point to maturity in the organization and confidence in its future direction. The executive and I welcome your comments and suggestions to improve your organization and I strongly encourage you all to take the opportunity to its full advantage. Wishing you continued success in your efforts. Peter Bobrowsky CANQUA - President B.C.
