A set of books by Krammer and Lange-Bertalot is "the bible" for freshwater diatom analysis, but its in German, it has processing methods, identification etc. in it. I suppose you'll get lots of replies to your message, but here's a different tip you may find useful. There's a really knowledgeable diatomist in your country [New Zealand] called Stuart R. Stidolph. He's not professionally involved in the beasts but regularly publishes in the major scientific journals. I think he could assist you with lots of information, e.g. on sampling and organising a collection. He is a superb microscopist too.
