From: PO4::"lotter@SGI.UNIBE.CH" "Andy Lotter" 9-MAY-1996 14:15:28.31 To: Multiple recipients of list PALEOLIM CC: Subj: 7th International Symposium on Palaeolimnology 1997 Dear colleagues, as we could not get hold of all addresses of possibly interested palaeolimnologist I shall try to reach as many of you as possible by means of the Paleolimnology listserver. Some of you may get the same information by ordinary mail, too. **************************************************************************** ***************** 7th International Symposium on Palaeolimnology, 28th Aug. - 2nd Sept. 1997, in Heiligkreuztal/Riedlingen, Germany At the 6th International Symposium on Palaeolimnology held in Canberra 1993 it was decided, that the 7th symposium should be organized by German and Swiss colleagues. The organizing committee proposed to focus this symposium on laminated sediments. These sediments whether they may be cored in freshwater or saline lakes represent one of the best ecological archives. Their study is a major tool to understand the nature and the history of ecosystems. The 7th International Symposium on Palaeolimnology will be held in Heiligkreuztal /Riedlingen in SW-Germany from Aug. 28th to Sept. 2nd 1997. The symposium will be preceded and followed by several excursions. It is important for this symposium to profit from the contributions of the colleagues from the Eastern and Developing Countries and also from younger colleagues, who were financially long times excluded from international scientific meetings. We therefore decided to have a less expensive symposium and to cut unnecessary costly luxury. No commercial agency will be appointed for the organization. To save a maximum of time for the scientific discussions the symposium will be based on poster presentations opened by a key note. The posters will be briefly presented by the author(s) in a guided poster session. Authors will be allowed to present one poster in the guided session, but may also expose an additional poster according to available space. There will be no parallel sessions. The language of the symposium will be english. Main themes and topics of the symposium - laminae versus varvae - microfabric of the laminae - statistical approaches - salt lakes, sebkhas, playas - the signal of human impact - archives of environmental change - free contributions Workshops or specialized meetings may be organized during the symposium. Please indicate if you wish to run an additio-nal workshop. Microscopes, projectors, video set for demonstrations will be provided in separate lecture rooms. The site of the symposium Heiligkreuztal is a well preserved old monastery, recently restored and today run as a seminar-center. It is situated in the upper Danube region near Ulm in a rural landscape near the terminal moraine of the Riss glaciation. The monastery provides not only the necessary technical facilities for the symposium but also accomodation for about 150 persons. Thus, unpleasant transportations can be avoided and participants stay together for a longer time. There are two categories of accomodation: - single and double rooms for about 120 persons in the monastery itself - youth hostel type accomodation on the compound for 30 persons Both classes will provide full board to very acceptable prices. Additional accomodation at reasonable prices is available in small hotels and inns nearby. How to get to Heiligkreuztal International airports at Frankfurt, Muenchen, Stuttgart or Zuerich. There is regular Intercity train connection from the central stations of Muenchen, Stuttgart or Zuerich and from Frankfurt airport to Ulm. Ulm is connected with Riedlingen by regular regional and Intercity trains. Transport service from/to Riedlingen to/from Heiligkreuztal will be provided for the days of arrival and departure. The time table Thursday 28.8.1997: arrival of participants and of pre-symposium excursions, registration Friday 29.9.1997: keynotes and poster sessions Saturday 30.8.1997: keynotes and poster sessions, excursion to Lake Constance Sunday 01.9 .1997: keynotes and poster sessions, excursion to Federsee Monday 02.9.1997: keynotes and posters Thuesday 03.9.1997: departure of participants and of post-symposium excursions The registration The registration fee will be 150 DM for early registration (before February 15th 1997) and 200 DM for late registration. The costs for board and lodging will be about 90 DM in the monastery class and about 60 DM in youth hostel class. To minimize costs we shall not accept credit cards and cheques. Late registration will also be possible in cash. The registration fees will include: the abstract volume the two mid-symposium excursions some social events Deadlines August 15th 1996: Returning of the first circular. November 1996: Sending of the second circular to those who answered to the first. February 15th 1997: Deadline for registration at low prices and definitive registration for the excursions by payment of excursion deposits. June 15th 1997: Deadline for the abstracts. The excursions: There are two pre-symposium-excursions: A Pleistocene and Holocene lakes in North Germany: Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein (5 days) Organizers: Merkt and colleagues Participants: min 20, max 40. Start in Hamburg, arrival at Heiligkreuztal B The Maar lakes of the Eifel region (4 days) Organizers: Negendank and colleagues Participants: min 8, max 24 Start in Frankfurt, arrival at Heiligkreuztal. During the Symposium there will be two half days trips: C Lake Federsee and its surroundings D The ecological problems of Lake Constance The costs of these two excursions are covered by the registration fees. Three post-symposium excursions will visit the alpine borderland and Tunisia: E Holocene and Pleistocene lakes in Southwest Germany: Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bayern (5 days) Organizers: Merkt, Mueller and colleagues Participants: min 20, max 40. Start at Heiligkreuztal, arrival at Muenchen airport / central station. F Holocene and Pleistocene lakes in the central part of Switzerland (4 days) Organizers: Lotter, Sturm and colleagues Participants: min 5, max 16. Start at Heiligkreuztal, arrival at Zuerich airport/central station. G Sebkhas and playas in southern Tunisia. Sedimentological and limnological history of a semiarid region (7 days) Organizers Schulz and colleagues Participants: min 5, max 20. start at Heiligkreuztal, arrival at Frankfurt/Stuttgart/Muenchen airport (depending on charter possibilities). The costs for the excursions will be calculated as low as possible. For that reason we need to know the approx. number of interested colleagues as soon as possible.
