Head" To: QUATERNARY@MORGAN.UCS.MUN.CA Subject: PALYNOSTRATIGRAPHY AT LOW LATITUDES The following is posted for G. Norris and L. de Verteuil. Pls respond directly to L. de Verteuil (devert@petrotrin.com). Thanks and apologies for cross posting. Martin Head ******************************************************************************* SYMPOSIUM ON "PALYNOSTRATIGRAPHY AT LOW LATITUDES" Venezuela, 16-19 November, 1997 Geoffrey Norris (University of Toronto) and Laurent de Verteuil (Petrotrin, Trinidad) are organizing a symposium on "Palynostratigraphy at Low Latitudes" to be held in Porlamar (Margarita Hilton; Isla Margarita), Venezuela 16-19 November, 1997. This symposium commemorates the 50th anniversary of Industrial Palynology in Venezuela and is being convened under the auspices of the Venezuelan Geological Society (SVG) in association with the 8th Venezuelan Congress of Geology and the 1st Latin American Congress of Sedimentology. Terrestrial and marine plant/algal communities in the tropics differ considerably from their high latitude counterparts in both ecologic and taxonomic structure, and in their responses to climatic change. The current emphasis on genetic stratigraphy in basin analysis is providing a stimulus among some palynologists, in both industry and academe, to re-interpret the taphonomy and palynofacies of low latitude palynomorph assemblages, in terms of how ecosystems respond to climatic and tectonic cyclicity. Some of these stratigraphic studies incorporate new ideas from the most up-to-date botanical research on tropical vegetational ecology and biodiversity mapping. The symposium will explore new and evolving models and concepts for applying sequence biostratigraphy in low paleolatitude basins. The thrust will be to bring together experts in both the marine and terrestrial realm who use palynology to make stratigraphic, paleovegetational, and paleoenvironmental interpretations in the tropical and sub-tropical areas or who are concerned with correlations across latitudinal belts. "Palynostratigraphy at Low Latitudes" is one of three symposia that are being held during the congress, under the wider theme of "Impact of Biostratigraphy on Geology". The two other symposia are: "Cretaceous Correlations" and "High Resolution Dating". Abstracts should not exceed 250 words and should be sent directly to Laurent de Verteuil. In view of the timing constraints, abstracts should be submitted only by FAX (809 658-3074) or email (devert@petrotrin.com).
