I'm not a palynologist, so I can't vouch for it, but we're using it in a graduate palynology seminar, and I believe it comes recommended for it's "PSIMP"licity. Written originally for DOS, I believe, but also was made available for Macintosh. It'll run fine on windows. They should address a message to: listproc@lists.colorado.edu with the contents of their message being: subscribe tilia-l The subject line of this message should be blank. I will be sending out a general Administrative posting shortly (including instructions on how to unsubscribe!). ----------------------------------------------------------------- Fraser Mitchell School of Botany Tel. +353 1 6081811 Trinity College Fax +353 1 6081147 University of Dublin Dublin 2 Ireland IQUA on the internet: http://www2.tcd.ie/~fmitchll/iqua.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- From: PO3::"QUATERNARY@MORGAN.UCS.MUN.CA" "Research in Quaternary Science" 6-MAR-1996 10:36:41.79 To: Multiple recipients of list QUATERNARY CC: Subj: Re: pollen analysis software It is true, there is a new Tilia list server, thanks to John Keltner at NGDC. Full details are below. Eric Grimm Tilia Users' List TILIA-L Administrative Posting February 1996 For tilia-l@lists.colorado.edu ** Please read and keep a copy of this posting. ** CONTENTS: 1. Netiquette and TILIA-L 2. LISTPROC Technicalities--How To Use A List *********************************************************************** 1. NETIQUETTE and TILIA-L *********************************************************************** There should not be a need for many rules on this list. There are a couple of points, however, that need to be covered for everyone's happiness. 1. The list is set to distribute any reply you make to the entire list. If you wish to make a private comment, you must ensure that you reply to the original author of the message (the person in the "From:" header field) rather than to the list itself (the "Sender:" field). If you are sending a "thanks" message or similar message that is directed at one or two people only, please reply to those people directly rather than to the list. 2. It is recognized that quoting messages is sometimes important in order to preserve context. However, please limit your quoting to that which is absolutely necessary to the thread--and PLEASE delete all included header lines if your mailer includes them in the body of your reply. *********************************************************************** 2. LISTPROC TECHNICALITIES--HOW TO USE A LIST *********************************************************************** The list, TILIA-L, is managed automatically by LISTPROC at the University of Colorado. If someone wishes to subscribe to or unsubscribe from TILIA-L they must communicate with LISTPROC (and not the list itself). LISTPROC also provides other services. Send LISTPROC the Help command to learn about these additional services. ============================================================ Q. What is the format for sending commands to LISTPROC? A. First of all, be sure you send them to LISTPROC and not to the list. If you want additional information about listproc commands, send the command HELP to listproc@lists.colorado.edu. To send commands by mail, simply address a message to: listproc@lists.colorado.edu with a blank subject line and the command you want to send as the body of the message. ============================================================ Q. I know someone who wants to join the list. How do they do it? Users must subscribe themselves to this list. They should address a message to: listproc@lists.colorado.edu with the contents of their message being: subscribe tilia-l Example: subscribe tilia-l Carolus Linnaeus The subject line of the message should be blank. ============================================================ Q. How do I send a message to the list? To send to the list, address messages to: tilia-l@lists.colorado.edu Your message will be sent to everyone who is subscribed to the list. As currently set up, you will receive a copy of your postings. ============================================================ Q. Should the situation arise, how do I unsubscribe from TILIA-L? A. You may leave the list at any time by sending a "UNSUBSCRIBE TILIA-L" command to LISTPROC@LISTS.COLORADO.EDU. Please note that this command must NOT be sent to the list address (TILIA-L) but to the TILIA-L LISTPROC address (LISTPROC). To remove yourself from this list, address a message to: listproc@lists.colorado.edu with the contents of the message being: unsubscribe tilia-l To repeat: this command must NOT be sent to the list address (TILIA-L). ~~~~~~~~ PLEASE note the address: listproc@lists.colorado.edu ~~~~~~ ============================================================ Q. What if I try to unsubscribe and am told I do not appear in the list? A. It is most likely that your Internet address has changed slightly and LISTPROC does not recognize your ID. Contact the list owner. If you can't figure the problem out, do post a message to the list at large to unsubscribe you or to confirm you. Send all such mail directly one of the list owners. See below. ============================================================ Q. Who are the list owners and how do I contact them? A. The list owner is John Keltner (keltner@stripe.colorado.edu) ============================================================ ******************************************************************* Dr. Eric C. Here at Cambridge we use the PSIMPOLL data crunching and PSCOMB plotting programs, both written by Keith Bennett. They are very simple, less temperamental than TILIA and plot better quality diagrams. Best of all, they are *free* and available via FTP from: http://www-palecol.plantsci.cam.ac.uk In addition (and in answer to a recent list question) there is a program for the Psion organiser pocket computer called POLLTAX which is used for pollen tally counts, also freely available from the site above. The three programs are designed to work together and with the aid of a 'comms-link' to your desktop computer from the Psion, data entry is rapid and precise. Hope this is of some help! It was written by Keith Bennett at Cambridge and he keeps updating it. It also has a complete manual. Latest editions of both program and manual are available, free of charge, from: http://www-palecol.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/ The most annoying aspect of the program is that since it outputs the diagram as a Postcript file, you can't examine your diagram without printing it (unless you've got special software), and that must be done on a Postscript printer. Concerning a guide for Tilia and TilaGraph: A six-page expansion of the menu structure was printed in one of the INQUA Data-Handling Newsletters. You can pick up a self-expanding file called TILMENUZ.EXE from the INQUA File Boutique. When the file is on a DOS computer, typing TILMENUZ (enter) will cause the file to expand into a PostScript file that can be sent directly to a PostScript printer. The Boutique's www address is: http://geology.wisc.edu/~maher/inqua.html and by anonymous ftp: geology.wisc.edu cd to pub/inqua and type bin or binary before getting tilmenuz.exe. For those interested, the Data-Handling Methods Newsletter will appear again this summer. If you want to get on the mailing list, notify me at the address on the tag-line at the end. If you already are on the list but have an address change or e-mail change, please let me have it now. And if you are on the mailing list but do NOT want to be, let me know that too.
