From T.van.Kolfschoten@RULPRE.LEIDENUNIV.NLThu May 1 16:54:55 1997 Date: Wed, 8 Jan 1997 18:42:46 +0000 From: Thijs van Kolschoten Reply to: jonas.satkunas@lgt.lt To: Multiple recipients of list QUATERNARY Subject: INQUA-SEQS Symposium, Vilnius (Lituania) The INQUA-Subcommision on European Quaternary Stratigraphy informs you about the next INQUA-SEQS Symposium September 14-19, 1997, Vilnius (Lithuania) The Late Pleistocene in Eastern Europe: Stratigraphy, palaeoenvironment and climate Scientific programme The symposium in 1997 will focus on stratigraphy and palaeoenvironment of the Late Pleistocene in eastern Europe. The meeting will be held in Eastern Lithuania - one of the most classic areas with marginal zones from the Last Glaciation. Eemian and Weich s elian sequences, located just outside this limit, provide excellent possibilities to find continious sedimentary and climatic records covering the whole Last Interglacial/Glacial cycle. Therefore, scientific excursions will include the stratigraphically m ost important key sites, which have been practically unknown for Quaternary scientists in western Europe and elsewhere due to language and political barriers. Sunday, 14 September Arrival in Vilnius and registration. Departure to Dubingiai. Evening lecture, Supper. Monday, 15 September Paper and poster sessions. Tuesday, 16 September Excursion to South Lithuania. Type sections of: Merkine (Eemian) and Snaigupele Interglacials, Early-Middle Weichselian interstadials/stadials, Weichselian glacial deposits. Wednesday, 17 September Excursion to Vilnius environs. Moraines of Saalian age, Eemian-Weichselian sequences outside the limit of the Weichselian glaciation, maximum extend of the Weichselian glaciation, Eemian-Weichselian sequences inside the glaciated area. Thursday, 18 September Paper and poster sessions. Final discussions. Friday, 19 September Departure. Symposium place The symposium will take place at Summer resort in Dubingiai, 35 km north of Vilnius, on shore of the lake Asveja (longest lake in Lithuania, 18 km) which was formed by subglacial melt waters. Vicinities of the Dubingiai can be characterised as typical ar e a of the marginal moraines of the Last Glaciation with picturesque landscape of hilly lakeland. The Dubingiai Summer resort offers both accomodation and venue for scientific programme. Sauna and pool, bar, boats for fishing and other facilities are avail a ble as well. Presentations and abstracts The presentations should be oral or poster. The time for oral presentations is 15 minutes, plus 5 minutes for discussion. the official language will be English. If number of presentations at the same theme exceeds time constrains, the authors will have the opportunity to present their paper in a poster format. Poster presentations will be discussed together with the oral presentations. All the presentations, bot h oral or poster, should include an extended abstract, and will be published in a Symposium volume after a review by the Scientific Committee. The instructions to the authors will be included in the second circular. Provisional costs The Symposium fee is c.a. USD 350, which includes the full board, conference dinner, transport during the field excursions and conference material.
