About Us
The Office of Diversity Education (ODE) at Indiana University Bloomington is a
unit in the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural
Affairs. The ODE works in cooperation with various support units to consult
with, advise, evaluate and develop diversity education programs with teams and
individuals in various academic and non-academic units. The ODE also works with
student groups on multicultural competencies, leadership development and IU
related diversity issues.
Mission: to be a positive change agent to
and for students and faculty via the advancement of cross-cultural dialogue and
collaboration in order to promote greater awareness of issues related to culture
and diversity. Additionally, the ODE will assist other units in preparing IU
students to enter an ever increasingly diverse work force and society.
Ultimately, the mission is to provide quality services and programs to as many
students and faculty as possible.
Vision: The vision of the ODE is to transform the
campus climate at IUB by attracting thousands of students and hundreds of
faculty to diversity education programs and to truly change their attitudes,
thoughts and behaviors toward diverse populations. Furthermore, I
envision the ODE at IUB to have a reputation as a nationally recognized
leader in best practices for diversity education among colleges and
universities.
Service Statement: to promote a welcoming, respectful and
professional environment by helping groups and individuals to see culture
beyond gender, ethnicity, orientation, race, and religion through the
facilitation of a greater awareness of the benefits of diversity.
Goals:
- Advance the mission and goals of Indiana University, the Office of the
Vice President for Institutional Development and Student Affairs and the
Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Support and Diversity through the
design, implementation and assessment of programs and activities that
explore differences in race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation,
social class, spirituality and nationality.
- Provide educationally structured learning opportunities for social,
personal and intellectual/academic development.
- Engage members of the University community in personal and professional
development through training sessions, seminars, workshops and reflective
learning activities that challenge stereotypical modes of thinking.
- Provide appropriate evaluation of programs presented.
- Compile and disseminate current information and literature about
diversity education programs as they impact cultures within institutions of
higher education.
- Work cooperatively with other units, departments, and divisions within
the University community.
- Seek adequate funding and other resources necessary for Diversity
Education Programs.
