Personal Statement

Doreen Ewert joins the Department of Second Language Studies after 25 years of teaching in areas of second language studies in the U.S. and other parts of the world. After initially pursuing studies in English literature and History (B.A. Fresno Pacific College; M.A. English Literature, Notre Dame University), she shifted directions into applied linguistics after a period of teaching English in Warsaw, Poland.  This led to an M.A. in TESOL & Applied Linguistics (1992) and a Ph.D. in Linguistics (2006) from Indiana University. Her dissertation is entitled “Expressions of Temporality in the Non-narrative Written Discourse of Adult Language Learners.”  For the last 14 years, she has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students at Fresno Pacific University in the Program of Languages and Linguistics, directing the Intensive English Language Program, and chairing the Humanities Division.  Ewert has presented locally, nationally and internationally on various aspects of learning and teaching second languages.  Her research interests continue in the area of interlanguage development; language teacher development; and theory-driven language curriculum and program design.  In addition to teaching graduate students in SLS, Ewert is Director of English Language Instruction, overseeing the curriculum and program organization of the English Language Improvement Program for matriculated students and Intensive English Program for pre-matriculated students at Indiana University.
