Hop Sedge(Carex lupulina)

Native perennial sedge of wet woodlands, margins of ponds, streams, lakes, swamps, and wet prairies

Partly shaded and moderately damp conditions (plant in low, wet areas)

Spikelets are green or yellowish-brown, June - October

Grows 1 -2 ft.

Faunal Associations:

    • Waterfowl will eat the achenes
    • However, Carex spp. are wind-pollinated

Fun Fact: Named for the external similarities between its seed head and that of hops, a popular flavoring for beer
