About the California Historical Resource Information System (CHRIS)

The Centers of the California Historical Resource Information System (CHRIS) function as the official repository of site records, mapped locations, and survey or excavation reports for archeological sites in California. There currently are 12 Information Centers, usually housed on State University campuses, each of which responsible for a certain number of counties. They operate under the auspices of the California State Office of Historic Preservation and the State Historical Resources Commission, agencies responsible under PRC Section 5020 to maintain an inventory and provide records check services to the public. As the operational costs to support the Centers is not budgeted with state funds, they operate on a fee-for-service basis, with a fee-schedule approved by the Commission. The Centers provide records-check services for CAL FIRE projects. Upon request, using the correct forms and instructions, they will review a proposed project area, determine if any known archeological or historical sites exist within the mapped area, provide mapped locations of sites and copies of site records, and include other information useful to conduct an archeological investigation of the project area. The archeological records are confidential. Access to this information is generally limited to landowners, public agencies, and researchers, however, CAL FIRE has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Centers to allow for records checks to be conducted by RPFs and other archeologically-trained personnel working on CAL FIRE projects.
