Applying to EALC for Graduate Study

General Information

Thank you for your interest in East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University.  We are pleased that you are considering joining us for your graduate studies.  Please feel free to contact the department with any questions concerning our programs or the application process.

The application process is different for domestic and international applicants.  Please make sure that you review the appropriate admissions information. 

Graduate Degrees Offered:

  • MA in Chinese, Japanese, or East Asian Studies
  • MA in Chinese or Japanese with a Language Pedagogy Track
  • PhD in Chinese or Japanese
    • PLEASE NOTE:  We do NOT offer a PhD program in Language Pedagogy

Please keep these things in mind as you begin to prepare your application:

  • East Asian Languages and Cultures admits students only for Fall semester.  We do not have Spring or Summer admission
  • The Application deadline for International applicants is December 1st
  • The Application deadline for Domestic applicants is January 15th
  • Admissions decisions will be mailed at the beginning of March
  • A limited amount of financial aid is offered by EALC.  We encourage applicants to investigate many financial aid options.
  • To be considered for financial aid, International applicants must score at least the following on the TOEFL exam:

- 93 Internet Based Test (iBT)

- 237 Computer based test

- 580 paper based test

Domestic Applicants

Guidelines for Domestic Applicants to Graduate Programs

Fall 2009 Admission

 

The Application deadline for Domestic Applicants is January 15, 2009.

- Domestic applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  If you are an international applicant, please see the section on international applications below.

Some guidelines for applying:

1. Once you have determined which program you would like to apply for, begin to prepare your application materials. 

All domestic applicants must submit:

    • Online Application for Graduate Admission
    • Statement of purpose (300-500 words)
    • Academic writing sample (usually a five to ten page paper) in English
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores
    • Complete official transcripts of ALL college and university credit
    • $50 Non-refundable application fee

2. Complete the online application and pay the application fee. The online application can be accessed at http://www.gradapp.indiana.edu/.  The following can be submitted as part of the online application:

·         Online Application for Graduate Admission

·         Statement of purpose (300-500 words)

·         Three letters of recommendation (submitted by your recommenders)

·         $50 Non-refundable application fee          

If you would like to be considered for Associate Instructor (AI) position in EALC, please be certain to fill out the “Departmental Questions” portion of the online application.

3.   The following application materials should be submitted directly to East Asian Languages and Cultures:

    • Academic writing sample (usually a five to ten page paper) in English
    • Three letters of recommendation (only if not submitted online)
    • Complete official transcripts of ALL college and university credit

4.  When you have taken the GRE General Test, have your scores reported to IU

The ETS code for Indiana University Bloomington is 1324 and the code for East Asian Languages and Cultures is 2601.

Scores can be reported either electronically, or in a paper format.  Scores must come directly from the testing agency.  Photocopies of your scores are not considered official and will not be accepted  by IU.

5. Supplemental Application for students who have studied internationally:

All domestic applicants (US citizens and permanent residents) who have studied at a college or university outside of the U.S. need to complete and submit the Supplemental Application available on the IU Graduate Admissions website at http://www.indiana.edu/~iuadmit/pdf/IUBSupIntlApp.pdf

The University Graduate School requires submission of this form in addition to all international transcripts.  This form needs to be completed for ANY coursework you have done overseas, even if you did not complete a degree, even if your work is listed as transfer credit on another transcript, and even if you only studied there for a short time.   Your file can be reviewed without the form, but you cannot be admitted to the Graduate School without this paperwork in place.

International Applicants

Guidelines for International Applicants to Graduate Programs

Fall 2009 Admission

The Application deadline for International Applicants is December 1, 2008.

It is very important that you visit IU’s International Admissions website at http://www.indiana.edu/~iuadmit/international/welcome/.  You can get a lot of useful information and access the online application from this website.

  Please see the Graduate School Bulletin at http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iu/grad/2007-2008/East0708.pdf. for the specific requirements for each degree option offered by EALC.

Steps for applying:

    • Academic writing sample (usually a five to ten page paper) in English
    • Three letters of recommendation

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores
    • Complete official transcripts of ALL college and university credit
    • $60 Non-refundable application fee

- If you are unable to access or submit the online application, please contact EALC for a paper copy of the application.

 

3.   These additional materials listed below must be submitted to the Office of International Admissions:

    • Academic writing sample (usually a five to ten page paper) in English
    • Three letters of recommendation (if not submitted online)
    • Complete official transcripts of ALL college and university credit

Do NOT send your application materials directly to EALC!  This can cause delays in the processing of your application!

December 1:
Application deadline for International Students (to allow time for additional processing)
January 15: 
Application deadline for Domestic Students (U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents)
February:
All complete application dossiers reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee
March 1:
Letters sent, announcing the Committee’s decisions. Only acceptance letters will be sent by e-mail
April 15:
Decision letter due from the accepted applicant
June:
Tuition and fee costs announced by the Board of Trustees (see the Bursar's website for details).
Early July:
Information sent to help students prepare to come to Bloomington
Late August:
Orientation Week (meet with the Director of Graduate Studies, register, arrange for a student ID, a computing account, explore the library, tour the department facilities, etc.)
