Department Associate Instructorships
Graduate student teaching assistants at Indiana University are called "associate instructors" (AIs). In EALC AIships are awarded competitively to outstanding applicants. Our AIs either lead drill sections in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language classes, or they lead discussion sections for introductory East Asian culture courses. Each year, we typically have about 20 AIships available, mostly in language courses. Though we give hiring priority to graduate students in EALC, we occasionally need to hire students (especially for our language courses) from other departments. Only those who complete an EALC AI application form will be considered for an AIship in our department.

Applications for AIships are available from the department office, and due each year on 31 January. The way to order your application depends on whether you are a prospective or current student, and whether or not you are currently teaching:

  • If you are a prospective student completing a paper application for admission (and so have written the department for an application for admission), then you will receive an AI application as part of your application materials.
  • If you are a prospective student filing your application for admission online, be sure to complete the "Departmental Questions" section of the electronic application form.
  • If you are currently a graduate student at IUB but not currently teaching, then stop by the department office (Goodbody 250) for an AI application.
  • If you are currently an AI in EALC and want to renew your application, complete an abbreviated application form, also available in the department office.

AI applications are reviewed once a year (in February) by appropriate EALC faculty. At this time, we hire AIs for all positions to be available in the following academic year. Though occasionally there are issues which impede our selection timetable, in general this is the calendar for AI selection:

AI Application Calendar
January 31:
EALC AI applications due to the department office, Goodbody 250
February:
Review of AI applications by EALC language courses and other designated EALC faculty
Late March:
Offer letters sent to priority AI candidates
April 15:
Response required from students to whom AIships were offered
May-August:
As positions become available, additional offers made to "alternate" AI candidates
Late August:
AI training during Orientation Week

PLEASE NOTE: Before Associate Instructor appointments may be completed, the IU Dean of the Faculties requires all non-native speakers of English to take and pass a "Test of English Proficiency for Associate Instructor Candidates (TEPAIC)." ONLY those students who have taken and passed TEPAIC are allowed to teach, so it is essential that international students and other non-native speakers of English sign up to take this test at the earliest possible date. For information on the test, including the dates offererd and sign up procedures, see the TEPAIC website.

University-Wide Opportunities
There are a variety of university-wide sources of financial aid. Follow these links for general information and descriptions of a wide spectrum of awards and grants.

Some specific non-departmental fellowships which graduate students in EALC may qualify for include:

A variety of grants for IU graduate students are provided by the Office of International Programs.

The Graduate School GradGrants Center provides information and training to IU graduate students about how to apply for and receive grants. In addition, the GradGrants Center provides one central location for available student academic positions (including graduate and research assistantships, AIships, and graduate workstudy) at their site, Indiana University Student Academic Appointment Vacancies.

Non-IU Sources of Aid
Asian Studies Grants and Fellowships

If you are a U.S. citizen, you may also consider applying for aid from the US federal government (including graduate work-study and loans). The Bloomington Office of Student Financial Assistance (BOSFA) has detailed instructions outlining all financial aid programs, eligiblity requirements, and application procedures. You can apply electronically for aid, as well as communicate with that office, through their web site. To be considered for the full range of funding options, be sure you meet their priority deadline.
