- Professor Liu has been awarded an Ameritech Fellowship, for development of technology-based Chinese language instruction: for a preview of the project, see a mini prototype lesson.
Trained in Foreign languages and literatures in undergraduate years at National Taiwan University, I developed a keen interest in language and creative writing early on. After coming to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies in Comparative Literature while working as language instructor at the EALL department of University of Oregon, I realized that my passion was not simply in great books and knowledge itself, but in human beings and the process of helping them acquire fundamental concepts and skills. I derive great joy from teaching and I love probing the minds of learns so that they can better understand themselves and other cultures. Thus, I ventured into the field of foreign language education, applied linguistics, and computer assisted language learning (CALL).As specialist in language pedagogy, I have strived to design and develop better learning tools for students studying Chinese as a foreign language: both in print and other media. One of my immediate goals is to develop a series of well-coordinated Chinese language textbooks, which embody the latest findings in learning theories and second language acquisition studies. The beginning series, Interactions I-II, is done. The intermediate series, Connections I-II, is being field-tested. The advanced series, Encounters I-II, is being drafted. In terms of CALL development, I have designed and piloted modules of four learning software: Chinese Kinship Expert, Listening Studio, Reading Toaster, and Da Jiang Nan Bei: Hyper Adventure in China. Another project that has been conceptualized and will soon be attempted is Chinese 500: Creative Grammar Practice for Teachers and Students. In addition to instructional design and development, I’ve also dealt with issues in immersion education, vocabulary acquisition, learning strategies, and teacher training.
