On successful completion of this course, students can expect to have:

  1. A perspective on basic social ideas in China, Japan, and Korea
  2. Orientation in the cultural histories of China, Japan, and Korea
  3. An understanding of difficult and often violent processes of transformation East Asian cultures experienced in the 20th century
  4. A basis for understanding contemporary events in China, Japan, and Korea
  5. A basis for further coursework in East Asian studies
  6. Useful background for engaging in business or professional work involving interaction with East Asian countries and people
