In 2005 we formed a partnership with our counterpart at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS), to maximize the impact of our respective East Asian studies programs in research, teaching, and outreach. The synergies created by this partnership are particularly notable in the areas of:

  • Anthropology
  • Education
  • Gender and sexuality

In addition to making the most of joint strengths, the centers and their faculty also provide support to each other in areas in which one campus is stronger than the other. Cross-campus scholarly exchanges are ongoing, with faculty actively participating in each other’s conferences, seminars, and dissertation workshops. As faculty and center staff share resources, engage in cross-campus teaching, and find new opportunities to interact with students and the community on both campuses, we look forward to further developing our commitments to robust undergraduate and graduate training, critical research, and outreach programs.

In 2006, 2010, and for a third time in 2014, the two centers were awarded four-year Title VI grants, which establish us as consortial partners in a Comprehensive National Resource Center, one of 17 such centers for East Asian languages and area studies in the United States, funded under the Title VI program of the U.S. Department of Education.
