On/Around IUB Campus

• IL/IN East Asian Transnational Film Seminar (May 20-22, 2007): A two-day seminar for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in the Midwest. The application deadline is March 9th.

• East Asian Colloquium Series: A series of talks on China, Japan and Korea by scholars in various disciplines that usually take place on Fridays at noon in Ballantine 004. Archived broadcasts of previous Colloquia presentations are available (from 1999- ).

• East Asian Film Series: A series of films from East Asia that are shown on Saturday evenings and are free to the public. Please note that these films are not suitable for a young audience. (Fall and Spring semesters only)

• Exploring East Asia through Stories: A program that helps children from preschool to 6th grade explore East Asian folktales through reading and crafts.

• Monsters and the Monstrous in Japanese History and Culture: A spring 2007 and 2008 workshop for premodern and modern Japanese monsters.

Past Events

• Japanese Song Workshop, Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the Mathers Museum on the Indiana University campus. Singer and ethnomusicologist Molly Adkins Jeon gave a demonstration of Japanese folk song while talking about the historical and cultural background of each song.

• Chinese Music: A Concert and Presentation, Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

In conjunction with the Teaching East Asian Music in the Elementary Classroom summer workshop, the East Asian Studies Center presented a concert of music from China with a demonstration of a luogu (Chinese percussion) ensemble featuring participants from the workshop directed by Dr. Kuo-huang Han, and a presentation and concert by Simon Feng on the classical Chinese stringed instrument, the guqin.

• Conference: "Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics," May 19-20, 2006, held at the IU Kelley School of Business.

  Pick up the newspaper's business section, turn on the TV, or look at the back of your shirt collar or computer, and it should be clear: despite the ruling party's name, China is no longer a Communist country. But as China moves toward the market, there is no consensus about whether "capitalism" is a better label and, if so, what type of capitalist system China is evolving toward. Several lenses are often applied to China. Some describe the People's Republic as a "transition economy" struggling to become a free-market regulatory state and compare her with other post-Communist regimes in central Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet republics. Others see China as a "developmental state" akin to Japan and other East Asian countries. Still others believe China is most fruitfully compared to "crony capitalist" states in Southeast Asia and Latin America. And a final group of observers hold that China is sui generis and her differences with other countries far outweigh any similarities.

  This conference critically examined these claims across a broad number of issues, including property rights, development of the legal system, the role of the local state, corruption, foreign trade and investment policy, protest, business lobbying, and the media. By bringing together leading China experts with general political economy specialists, the conference aimed to foster a two-way conversation that benefits those concerned with both better understanding contemporary China and extending the frontiers of our theoretical knowledge.

• The Japanese Empire: Gone, But Not Forgotten (Sept. 15-16, 2005): A Workshop organized by EASC -- the event was open to faculty, students and interested members of the general public.

• "Arts Across the Curriculum" (July 11-13, 2005) Enrichment Event in Bloomington IN for alumni of the NCTA "Teaching About Asia" and "Teaching East Asian Literature" seminars.

• Summer Language & Culture Program: Explored the language and culture of Japan and China during two-week summer courses. These special summer sessions were free and open to all faculty and staff of IU.

• Business in Emerging Markets Symposium (June 24, 2005): An executive seminar for business leaders which explored the economic power shift occuring over the next 35 years due to the changing markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

• Education Reform in China and Japan, Course & Study Tour (Spring 2005): (EALC 495/EDUC F401) Co-sponsored by EASC, EALC, and the School of Education, this course addressed the global impact of what Asian children are learning in school. The course concluded with a two-week trip to China and Japan.

• EASC sponsored a shamisen concert, "Nitta Oyako," as part of Lotus Blossoms 2005.

• Human Rights in Asia: (April 22, 2005): A examination of the status of human rights in Asian, including China, Tibet, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and India. Keynote remarks given by Tom Malinowski of Human Rights Watch.

• Indianapolis Children's Museum announced a new exhibit: "Five Friends from Japan," an immersive experience designed to raise the level of awareness of Asian cultures in children and families.

• "Globalizing East Asian Studies," a workshop on April 4-5, 2005 in Bloomington. Guest speakers included Martin Lewis, Kären Wigen, Adam McKeown, and Rana Miter.

• Ji-Li Jiang, author of "Red Scarf Girl," came to Indiana. She presented lectures at these dates and locations:

  • Nov. 20, 2004- Bachelor Middle School, Bloomington
  • Nov. 20, 2004- The Westin Center, Indianapolis

• Committee on Asian Security Inaugural Symposium (Nov. 18, 2004): This program was jointly sponsored by the East Asian Studies Center and the India Studies Program.

• Annual International Festival in Indianapolis (Nov. 4-7): A celebration of Indiana's diversity of culture and ethnic heritage. The first two days were dedicated to groups of K-12 students and their teachers.

• 3rd Annual Asia in the Curriculum Symposium - (Sept 16 - 18, 2004) at IUPUI Conference Center, Indianapolis.

• Marvelous, Magical Creatures from East Asia at the Monroe County Public Library (July 9, 2004): EASC staff and guests met famous Chinese, Japanese, and Korean mythical characers. For older preschool through grade 6 children. 

• Japanese Folk Song at the Mathers Museum (June 15, 2004): A workshop on the traditional style of learning Japn folk songs presented by Molly Adkins Jeon, ethnomusicologist.

• Pipa Concert by Hong Shao, Soloist on June 15, 2004 at the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium. This concert was presented in conjunction with our Teaching East Asian Music in the Elementary Classroom workshop.

• High School Honors Seminar (Friday, April 22, 2005): For high school students and teachers. The topic was "Motion Pictures and Motion in Pictures."

• Human Rights in North Korea: Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union. Speakers at the conference were Soon Ok Lee and Daniel Choi, survivors of the Korean Prison camps and Jack Rendler, Vice Chair of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea.

• Roundtable Discussion on "The Role of Japan in the War on Terrorism": Monday, March 29, 2004 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Moot Court in the Law School. The keynote speaker was Rebecca MacKinnon, former CNN Tokyo Bureau Chief. Listen to the WFIU "Profiles" interview with Rebecca MacKinnon.

• History Department's Brown Bag Series: Lynn Struve spoke on Monday, February 9, 2004.

• Ambassador Donald Gregg (Nov. 19, 2004). The former ambassador to South Korea spoke on security issues on the Korean Peninsula..

• 2003 Memory Links Conference (Oct. 30 - Nov. 2, 2004): An international conference on the history of memory in China at the IU-Bloomington campus. Included participants from US, Taiwan, Canada and P.R. China.

• Music From China: EASC hosted the chamber ensemble "Music from China' for concerts and masterclasses. (September 29- October 1st, 2003)

• East Asian Security Series: An informal lecture series at Borders Books and Music, Eastland Plaza, Bloomington.

• EASC Chinese Film Festival: In conjunction with China Century Entertainment, EASC participated in The New York Times Arts and Leisure Weekend from March 7 - 9, 2003. EASC screened three fascinating contemporary Chinese films.

• Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press in Authoritarian States (October 7, 2002): A roundtable discussion with Anthony Kuhn (Los Angeles Times) as a keynote speaker. Listen to the archived broadcast!
