Nationalities portrayed include a Vietnamese woman carrying a gun and an Albanian man armed with an axe. "The People" is used here in the political sense and implies the existence of "non-people" such as imperialists, counter-revolutionaries and other "bad elements," who were seldom portrayed after the non-State violence of the early Cultural Revolution was forcibly curtailed in 1969. Even after they disappeared from direct sight, these "bad elements" remained a threat and allusions to them were constantly made.
