Military Drill at First Light
Yao Zhongyu 1974, Shanghai

Teenagers engage in militia training. Their deadly serious expressions denote that this is not play, the enemy is real. During the mid-1970s, as Mao grew old, there was a bitter power struggle going on between factions in the top levels of the Party. Radicals led by the Gang of Four called for unceasing vigilance against the reappearance of counter-revolutionaries in the guise of revolutionaries. The mass "Anti-Lin Biao Anti-Confucius" campaign of 1973-74 was supposedly aimed at Zhou Enlai and others hiding beneath his wing and plotting to subvert the revolution.
