Women's Artillery Squad
Ding Zhuang and Yao Zhongyu 1974, Shanghai

A camouflaged woman's artillery squad drills with mortars. Their faces show the intensity and discipline of soldiers ready to fight for their nation. The squad's portrayal emphasizes exactitude and details, such as measuring distances and recording test data. China's progress and technological advances are symbolized by the women's weapons and the powerlines crossing the countryside. Posters such as this one exemplified Mao's saying "Women hold up half the sky" and urged women to actively participate in the revolution.
