| Mao stands before an enormous crowd of people, who are practically afloat in a sea of red flags. This poster is quite typical of those which deified Mao. While surrounded by his followers, Mao stands visually alone and above all others. The deification of Mao and the iconography which supported it were vital components of the Cultural Revolution. While all else was subject to criticism, Mao's person and words were inviolable. |
