Research Travel Grants, Summer 2013

The East Asian Studies Center at Indiana University (IU) will award a limited number of travel grants for summer 2013 to assist faculty at colleges and universities in the Midwest in their use of the East Asian Collection of the Herman B Wells Library, the special collections of the Kinsey Institute, the Lilly Rare Books and Manuscripts Collections, or other museums and libraries on campus. Grants of up to $300 will be awarded to help defray travel and living expenses.

The East Asian Collection houses more than 290,000 volumes in East Asian languages and subscribes to approximately 750 Chinese, Japanese, and Korean serials and newspapers and approximately 20 electronic resources focusing on East Asia. The general library collection includes approximately 221,000 volumes related to East Asian studies published in Western languages. The Kinsey Institute's collections include rare books, scrolls, art, artifacts, photographs, and films on cultural and historical aspects of sexuality in East Asia. The Lilly Library houses the Charles Boxer Collection, which contains a unique set of manuscripts and documents on Japan’s early contact with the West.

All travel must be completed and receipts forwarded to the East Asian Studies Center for reimbursement by July 31, 2013.

Interested applicants should submit each of the following:

  • One-two page description of research topic related to East Asian studies
  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae
  • Statement describing how applicant intends to use the library and/or museum collections
  • Budget of expected expenses, including a Mapquest printout showing one-way mileage to Bloomington, IN.

The following resources are available to EASC full-member faculty only.

Conference Travel Grants, 2012-13

Full-member faculty are eligible to apply for our travel grant competitions.

  • International travel can be covered but must be approved six weeks in advance of departure date, and the travel may need to be on U.S.-owned carriers. If planning an overseas trip, easc [at] indiana [dot] edu (contact us).
  • Priority is given to faculty who are presenting papers.
  • Maximum award amount is $500 and is meant to supplement other sources of support, which applicants are encouraged to seek.
  • Each faculty member is eligible to receive only one travel grant per 12-month period (October to September).
Application Deadlines
  • September 30, 2012 (for travel from October 2012 to January 2013)
  • February 1, 2013 (for travel from February to May 2013)
  • International travel plans must be approved six weeks in advance of departure date and before purchasing tickets.

Applications must include:

  • Application form (PDF)
  • One-page abstract of conference paper
  • Letter of invitation or copy of the conference program
  • Letter of endorsement from your department chair

Please note: Applications must be submitted prior to undertaking travel. It is possible to receive an award after the trip has been completed as long as the application was submitted before the trip began. The EASC executive committee, which makes all final funding decisions, meets in October to review fall applications for October–January travel, in February to review spring applications for February–May travel, and in May to review summer applications for June–September travel.
